Architect

 

David studied architecture at Iowa State University and the Architectural Association School of Architecture (London) achieving his registration in the United Kingdom in 1989 and in Washington State in 1993.  While working in London, David was the Canary Wharf Docklands Light Railway Station Coordinator – an experience that gave him insight into the design and construction of transportation systems in an urban setting.

Blogger

David began a blog column on the local website Exit 133 devoted discussing urban issue with Downtown Tacoma.  Called Imagine Tacoma, David used quick sketches to convey alternate concepts to existing or proposed developments.  In 2009, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects bestowed a Merit Award on David for his use of the column to foster an urban design dialogue for Tacoma – and was a cover article in the March 2010 CityArts magazine.

Father

David is the father of Benjamin Boe and a parental guardian of Alia Harding.  Ben is a graduating senior from Stadium High School and Alia is a graduating senior from the Tacoma School of the Arts.  Both are planning on attending college next year. 

Husband

David has been married to his best friend, Sandra Reid Boe, for over 29 years.  Having met in 1978, they both attended Normandale Community College and Iowa State University before living for five years in London, England.  They came to Tacoma, Sandra’s birthplace, in 1989 and bought their first house – a 1928 Craftsman Bungalow -  in the South End at 61^st and I Street.  Since 1995 they have lived in a 1948 Cape Cod in the Kandle Park Neighborhood.

Magician

David started performing stage magic in the Fourth Grade and has dabbled in the art of prestidigitation ever since (including reoccurring magic roles with the Christmas Revels).  David also had the great honor of opening for master shadow puppeteer Richard Bradshaw at the Tacoma Little Theater in 1992.

Musician

Once considering a career in music, David has been a percussionist in a wide variety of ensembles including:  concert band, symphonic orchestra, marching band, jazz ensemble, Dixieland band, Country Music band, Rock n’ Roll Band, Polka Band, and a Jazz Trio.  David sometimes can be seen sitting-in with the local Tacoma group "Jaden Row".

Reveler

David has been directly involved with Puget Sound Revels productions since 2006 including the annual Christmas Revels each year at the Rialto Theater.  His roles have ranged from a Mysterious Stranger in Victorian London, Father Christmas in a Mummer’s Play, to the better half of a Scottish Highland Ox.  David also participated with the Revels in the Tall Ships 2007 Festival.

Politician

David Boe was appointed to the Tacoma City Council January 14, 2010 to fulfill the unfulfilled term of the At-large Position No. 7.  Having been on the City’s Planning Commission for 5 years as the architect representative, David brings an in-depth understanding of Land Use and Development Issues along with a perspective of a small-business owner in Tacoma. 

Small-Business Owner

Since 1996, David has successfully managed a small architectural practice – BOE architects, pllc - within the Old City Hall Historic District in Downtown Tacoma.  Some of the projects designed by his firm include: the Umpqua Bank Building at 15^th and Pacific Avenue, the First United Methodist Church at South 7^th and Tacoma Avenue and the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation at South 17^th and Commerce (which received a special recognition by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2003).

Stable hand

David can be found many a Saturday volunteering at his wife Sandra’s Equine Assisted Activities Center in Graham called Changing Rein. Working with a core group of volunteers and instructors, Sandra teaches horseback riding skills and provides equine related activities and therapies for riders with a wide range of physical and emotional disabilities.  After classes, David looks forward to providing maintenance to the facilities using his tractor "Penelope".
